New Work - New Purpose

Published about 1 year ago • 2 min read

Hi Reader,

What a week! Actually, this newsletter picks up right where the last two left off: Bad working days and self-motivation, because those are the two things I’ve been struggling with this week.

I think, we’ve all been there: full calendars and overflowing to-do lists. And then attending an event that doesn’t really fit into this constellation? I would have liked to simply cancel my participation. But I had Nelson’s advice from the last podcast in mind: “Sometimes you have to push yourself to do something you don’t normally do.” So I put the tasks aside for a moment and went to the event:

"New Work - New Purpose" (by the House of New Work Group)

What was it about?

As the name suggests, it was about Purpose in the context of New Work. Every company, regardless of size, should answer its WHY: Why do we exist? This is the question that needs to be answered to build a human-centered organization.

And that’s where process comes in: because in building a human-centered organizations, we can’t get around processes, and of course employee involvement plays a particularly important role.

I have written a lot about purpose on NewProcessLab.com and talked about it in the New Process Podcast, but participating in the event remembered me on some very important aspects about Process Purpose:

  • A Process Purpose gives meaning to a process, provides guidance and inspires people.
  • It is important to ask the question “WHY” first, then to move on to the “HOW” (processes) and the “WHAT” (execution).
  • It is a challenge but can be a real booster to maximize the overlap of the three different types of purpose: individual purpose, organizational purpose and process purpose.
  • Defining a Process Purpose is the first step in the New Process Lifecycle. I think the Process Purpose is kind of a secret weapon for getting people excited about a process and shaping the transformation.
  • It is so important to involve the people from the start - open it up to everyone at the beginning, take your time to find the purpose of the process.
  • Having a clear direction for all team members promotes good cooperation. It allows everyone to know the end goal and how to get there, ultimately leading to a more cohesive team and better results.
  • When team members see the impact of their work and the process of achieving their goals, they become more passionate about their work. This passion can lead to higher productivity, creativity, and job satisfaction.

If you like to learn more about this, click here to have a look at the following blog post about Process Purpose.

As you may have noticed, there is unfortunately no new episode of the New Process Podcast this week, but if you are interested in the topic of Process Purpose, you can find two episodes about it by following the link.

Thank you very much for reading.

Have a great day!
Mirko

Hi Reader, Can you remember the last time you started a new project, turned a bright idea into reality or maybe even started your own business? If you're nodding yes, then you know the thrill of starting something new - and the mountain of to-do's that comes with it. One of the greatest challenges I've faced is the art of starting simple and progressing incrementally - the philosophy of the Minimum Viable Product (MVP). It still happens to me today that in my burst of motivation I want to do...

Hi Reader, Can you believe it's already November? Time does fly! 😳 I'd like to ask for a small favor that could make a big difference: As in the past two years, I've put together a brief survey to identify the BPM topics of 2024, and I'd love for you to participate.Because our community is such an important part of this journey, it is only logical that I collect your current thoughts and concerns:→ to get a better understanding of what BPM topics are important to you.→ to tailor the content...

Hi Reader, Expanding on the last newsletter, I'd like to stress the importance of interacting with other BPM enthusiasts. It's easy to recognize when someone is genuinely enthusiastic and deeply interested in a subject. In my opinion, this enthusiasm is what really drives us forward, especially in the research world. 🚀 Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of having meaningful conversations with a lot of passionate people. These discussions not only lead to fresh ideas and inspiration...
